Global nickel smelting rose in March despite the russia-Ukraine conflict

Global nickel smelting activity climbed in March, including in major producer Russia (which supplies about 10 percent of the world’s nickel) despite the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, satellite monitoring data showed On April 5, Reuters reported.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by commodity brokers Marex and SAVANT, Russian production continues to flow unimpeded. SAVANT is a satellite analytics service launched in 2019.

SAVANT had detected disruptions at Pobuzhskiy, Ukraine’s only producer of iron nickel, but not at Nornickel’s Nadezhda metallurgical plant in Russia, the statement said.

The global dispersion index for nickel rose to 47.3 in March from 41.6 in February.

China’s nickel pig iron (NPI) index rebounded to 55.4 in March from 37.8 in February as factories resumed production after the Winter Olympics.
